What I can do for trial attorneys? Most experienced trial attorneys readily see the need for an expert witness in appropriate cases-"There is no question that on this case I need a medical doctor [chemist, toxicologist, psychiatrist, etc.] first, to guide me through the minefield of this specialized area, and, second, to give opinions and testify if needed." Very few experienced trial attorneys, however, feel they have the need to retain another lawyer to help them with a given casenot even with a particularly tough area of the law that involves complex and highly specialized issues with which they have had little experience. ("I'm a trial lawyer! I know how to prepare and try a caseI don't need an attorney to tell me how to do things just because I'm breaking some new ground.")

Not one of those experienced trial attorneys, however, would hesitate one second to walk down the hall and knock on the door of a partner or senior associate who does have experience in the particular areaand the more experience with such cases they know that partner or associate to have, the quicker they would be to make that walk and seek initial guidance. Of course. Why not? What sensible trial attorneys would do otherwise? Why pass up a chance to benefit from the experience of a partner who is "just down the hall," readily available and glad to cooperate and assist-especially if they know that the partner has a proven track record with the very matters at issue?
